postheadericon Oh My Dear

"Oh My Dear"
by Tenth Avenue North

I called you up, you were in bed
Could barely make out the words that you said
But you wanted to see me instead so I got dressed
Then I stepped out into the snow
And walked for a mile or so
Felt the rush of blood come from the cold in my chest

You finally came to the door
And we talked for an hour or more
Until I asked if you would stay up till four
You said, "That's fine."
But you said, "There's something I have to say,
And I can't because I'm just so afraid."
And so I held you as you started to shake that night

Oh, my dear I'll wait for you
Grace tonight will pull us through

Until the tears have left your eyes
Until the fears can sleep at night
Until the demons that you're scared of disappear inside
Until this guilt begins to crack and the weight falls from your back
Oh, my dear I'll keep you in my arms tonight

You slowly lifted your head from your hands
You said, "I just don't think that you'll understand,
You'll never look at me that way again if you knew what I did."
And so your tears fell and melted the snow
You told me secrets nobody had known
But I never loved you more even though now I knew what you did

This song is a clear illustration of showing the love of Christ to each other. I was reminded of how much I love this song today and knew that it was time to share it with all of you. Here's something I wrote recently:

"I remember the day last year that we spent at Dunn Bros. like it was yesterday. I have never been more scared in my entire life to tell you something. I didn't even see it as a possibility that you could look at me the same way after that. And yet somehow, you found a way to love me more."

It's just like 1 John 4:11-12 says:

"Dear friends, since God loved us that much, we surely ought to love each other.
No one has ever seen God. But if we love each other, God lives in us,
and his love is brought to full expression in us."

We are specifically called to love each other the way God loves us. That is what this song is about. That is why I absolutely adore this song. Every time I hear it, I thank God for giving me a friend who lives this call in her life every day. A friend who, when I look in her eyes, I feel like I see myself the way she sees me, which is the way God sees me. And because she sees me that way, she sees my true worth.

"No distance of place or lapse of time can lessen the friendship of those
who are thoroughly persuaded of each other's worth."
- Robert Southey

If you don't already own this song, download it. And better yet, buy the whole album. Tenth Avenue North speaks amazing truth in their lyrics and I wholeheartedly recommend them. They have two albums, and I am in love with both of them. So check it out!

postheadericon Who Knew Fruit Could Be So Tricky?

"But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives:
love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness,
faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
There is no law against these things!"
- Galatians 5:22-23

This can be such a tough passage. These are some pretty lofty character traits to master. I know that I don't always live them out in my life. But then it occurred to me, maybe that's not exactly the point. Maybe the point is that the more we let God into our lives, the more the Spirit is in us, and the more these fruits just happen.

Of course, having said that, I think practice helps. I have a friend who is working on these fruits one at a time until they're easier for her. I think I might have to join her on that. It's a good idea.

I guess what I'm saying is two things. One, we can always practice living out these things in our lives. We get lots of opportunities to practice them every single day. But secondly, the closer we get to God; the more we try to mirror Him in our lives, I think the more the Spirit fills us up and allows them to happen without us thinking about them so much.

So which one do you struggle with the most? What ones are already easy for you? Which one does God give you the most opportunity to work on? And which one are you going to choose to practice today?

postheadericon Paul's Prayer For Spiritual Growth

"When I think of all this, I fall to my knees and pray to the Father,
the creator of everything in heaven and on earth.
I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources
he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit.
Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him.
Your roots will grow down into God's love and keep you strong.
And may you have the power to understand, as all God's people should,
how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is.
May you experience the love of Christ,
though it is too great to understand fully.
Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life
and power that comes from God.
Now all the glory to God, who is able,
through his mighty power at work within us,
to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think.
Glory to him in the church and in Christ Jesus
through all generations forever and ever!Amen."
- Ephesians 3:14-21
