In an artful move, the writer-director of ‘The World Is Flat’, Shabna Azmi, has chosen a script for the film The Art of Being Free, a documentary that follows the life of an artist and explores the themes of freedom, empathy, justice and human rights.

The film, based on the book by Nobel laureate Amartya Sen, is set to be released in May 2019.

In an interview to NDTV, Azmi said she has been working on the script for two years and had wanted to tell the story of Shabaneen Khan, an artist whose art is an integral part of the history of India.

“I had been thinking about what my character’s story is, the meaning behind her life and what she has learnt,” she said.

The filmmaker said the story had to have the right tone, and the themes had to be explored from different perspectives.

“The film will have to have empathy, compassion, honesty, honesty in its politics, religion and spirituality.

The message has to be the same for all of us,” she added.”

The Art Of Being Free” will be based on Azmi’s own personal journey.

In her book, she says she was diagnosed with mental illness at an early age and had to cope with it in her art.

“My family did not know what to do with me, and I had to live with the knowledge that I was mentally ill.

But I never lost hope,” she wrote.

Azmi is a prominent figure in India’s emerging art scene.

Her film The World Is Flattened, which is scheduled to be premiered at the Cannes Film Festival this week, was also inspired by Sen.

The director, who has directed films including ‘The Great Train Robbery’, ‘Salaam, Saheb’ and ‘Achchi’, said her work has always been rooted in the universal themes of humanism, tolerance and freedom.

Azmi, who is from Maharashtra, is a writer, filmmaker and activist.

She is currently living in New York and was recently awarded the Golden Bear Award at the Sundance Film Festival for her work on the Sundaresh Desai Award winning documentary ‘Kumbh Mela’.
