postheadericon Above All

I was kind of crabby today. I was feeling kind of bummed about something and didn't really know what to do about it. I went about my day, but my mood never really lifted...

Until two people surprised me with some unexpected kindness. Both acts were probably seen as very "small" or simple by the people who did them, but both made a huge impact on my bad day.One brought a smile to my face, the other brought tears to my eyes.

I'm telling you this because I don't want you to underestimate how powerful your words and actions can be. You are the ability to change someone's whole day, maybe even week, and maybe even beyond. You have no idea what kind of day someone is having, or what's going on in their life, but you can lift someone's spirit with a simple, kind gesture or some encouraging words. And that's pretty awesome!

After my mood changed for the better, I was on my way to church. For probably the 3rd or 4th time in a couple of days, the song "Above All" came on the radio. It's a song I know well, but haven't listened to in a while. Because I have heard it so many times this week, I turned it up and really listened.

Above all powers
Above all kings
Above all nature
And all created things
Above all wisdom
And all the ways of man
You were here
Before the world began

Above all kingdoms
Above all thrones
Above all wonders
The world has ever known
Above all wealth
And treasures of the earth
There's no way to measure
What You're worth

Crucified
Laid behind a stone
You lived to die
Rejected and alone
Like a rose
Trampled on the ground
You took the fall
And thought of me
Above all

The thing is, it doesn't matter when people disappoint us...because they will. It's human nature. And it's often unintentional. But it also doesn't matter. The King of Kings thought of us above all else. Jesus lived His entire life just to die for us. How incredible is that?!

As I'm typing this, I'm thinking back to English class this week. We've been reading the short story, "The Scarlet Ibis." I have this picture in my head of this fragile and mangled, but absolutely stunning bird lying dead. The brilliant red against the contrast of the dull surroundings. Like the rose trampled on the ground. Such shocking beauty, but also holding death. Jesus came and died because He knows that we are worth it. He thought of me, and He thought of you, above all. That really puts everything else in perspective. And today, I'm thankful for that perspective.

"Jesus said, 'It is finished.'
With that, he bowed his head
and gave us his spirit."
- John 19:30
